Turning the Heel

There’s something magical about socks. I’ve always thought so, ever since my first one. It feels two dimensional for so long even though, clearly, it’s a three dimensional object. You just go around and around in circles, wondering how on Earth your calf could possibly be that long and thinking you should have made ankle socks instead. Then, as if by instinct, something in your head says, “Time to turn the heel.” So you start to make the ankle flap, the the little pocket for the heel. And still, this three dimensional object feels like a two dimensional object, a line instead of a tube, basically still just a strand of yarn on your needles.

Then comes the magic. You pick up the stitches to begin to form the heel gusset. And suddenly, this formerly two dimensional object is not just three dimensional – it has somehow become four dimensional. It has entered a whole new state of existence. It is becoming A SOCK.

Hang on, little toes. It’s getting there.
